Bio
Rachel Wolf (she/her) is a photographer who transcends traditional photography by exploring the very essence of the photographic process, a method she terms liminagraphy. This unique approach explores the threshold where light and alchemy come together to create tangible forms. Specializing in camera-less photography, alternative processes, and immersive light-based installations, Wolf works in her darkroom, where she exposes photographic materials—such as paper and film—to various objects, light sources, and chemical agents, freeing her from the constraints of conventional photography. This process fosters a deep, immersive connection with her materials, where time itself becomes a key collaborator. Her work captures layered moments, challenging the notion of photography’s singular instant.
Born and raised in Alaska, Wolf's work is profoundly influenced by the dynamic interplay of light and darkness in her environment. Her experiences with the aurora borealis have ingrained in her a deep appreciation for the transcendent qualities of light, which remain central to her artistic practice.
As an educator and speaker, Wolf is passionate about inspiring others by sharing her love for light and photography. She is a strong advocate for the collaborative nature of art and its potential to build community. Wolf co-founded FO(u)RT Collective, a multidisciplinary arts group dedicated to critical discourse and the organization of exhibitions and events. Additionally, she is an active member of The Guild at LightBox Photographic Gallery, contributing to its mission of promoting diverse photographic processes through exhibitions and workshops.
Wolf’s work has received national and international recognition, with exhibitions in Germany, Hungary, Canada, and across the United States, including New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, Seattle, and Portland. Her photographs are held in both public and private collections. A graduate of Hampshire College (BA) and Pacific Northwest College of Art (MFA), Wolf can be found playing in her darkroom in Portland, OR.
