  • Dale T. Mortensen Scholarship

Dale T. Mortensen, Willamette University class of 1961, earned the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2010.  Mortensen graduated from Willamette with a bachelor’s degree in economics and math.  He served as senior class president and participated in theater and policy advocacy.   After earning his Ph.D. in economics from Carnegie Mellon University, Mortensen joined the faculty at Northwestern University in 1965.  Professor Mortensen pioneered an approach to studying labor economics that led to a better understanding of unemployment and earned him the Nobel Prize.   Prior to his death in 2014, Mortensen created an endowed scholarship fund bearing his name.   At the time, Mortensen explained, “A liberal arts college trains people to be both literate and analytical, and that’s the best training you can have for the future.”
