Audition, Placement, and Competitions

Prospective students have the opportunity to earn a competitive Music Scholarship Award. Students do not have to declare a music major to audition or to receive the scholarship.

Music Theory Assessment is for new students interested in a Music major or minor. It is held during Opening Days.

Any student interested in joining a music ensemble must audition during the first week of classes in August. Sign up sheets are posted in Rogers Music Center on the boards between 110 and 111.
Being a music major or minor is not required for participation in performance groups, or to take lessons. Students with any academic interest are welcome!
Incoming students who are interested in a Music major or minor should also plan to attend the Music Theory Assessment. This is critical for determining your placement in the Musicianship sequence. Even if you're not sure about declaring, plan to take the assessment anyway!
Applied Lessons in piano or voice require a Placement Audition, to place students with the instructor that best matches the student's skills and interests. Placement auditions are held during Opening Days. The sign up sheet for placement audition slots is located in the Rogers Music Center, on the board between 108 & 110. Students interested in taking voice or piano lessons sign up for a placement audition.
Applied Lessons in all other instruments do not require an audition. New and returning students register for Lessons and coordinate directly with the instructor on scheduling the Lessons time/day.

Each fall, the Willamette University Music Department hosts a Concerto Competition. The winner gets an opportunity to perform with the University Chamber Orchestra in their spring concert.
The competition is open to all full-time Willamette University students.
