Alpha Phi

Alpha Phi at Willamette

Overview

Alpha Phi was founded at Syracuse University by ten of the first nineteen women admitted to the newly opened university. The Original Ten, the founders of Alpha Phi, were women of courageous vision and pioneering hearts. Pursuing their studies in a male-dominated university, these women yearned for a circle of friends who could sympathize with each other’s troubles and support each other’s ambitions. On September 18, 1872, these ten women initiated themselves into Alpha Phi.

The sisterhood of Alpha Phi stretches from coast to coast through 168 collegiate campuses and more than 200,000 members. Sisters share a commitment to excellence and a strong desire to help one another and their communities. Alpha Phis are leaders, scholars, contributors and lifetime members of a sisterhood that values these traits.

Alpha Phi assists college women in making informed choices to reach their highest potential. Alpha Phi enhances and promotes each member's development and learning by focusing on sisterhood, service, scholarship, leadership, loyalty and character development.

The innovative leadership and organizational practices of Alpha Phi's Founders in 1872 set the spirit for the Alpha Phi of today...a sisterhood that values the past but looks forward to the progress offered by the future.

Philanthropy – The Alpha Phi Foundation

Created in 1956, the Alpha Phi Foundation is one of the oldest women’s fraternal foundations and empowers women to be generous givers. Its primary philanthropic mission is supporting women’s heart health and developing women as leaders. The annual Heart to Heart Grant awards $100,000 to medical professionals to better understand heart disease in women—specifically its symptoms, treatment, and prevention. Since its inception in 1993, the grant has funded over 30 cutting-edge projects focused on the improvement of women’s cardiovascular care.

Our Chapter’s Purpose

The objectives of our Fraternity are the promotion of growth in character; unity of feeling, sisterly affection, and social communion among our members. In all that we do, we try to obey the principles of justice and right. We have banded ourselves together to improve our minds and hearts, and we seek to aid each other through a constant watch care always given in love.
