Founded in 1856 as the Philomathean Society, the Willamette University Debate Union is the oldest debate program in the Western United States. As a co-curricular initiative of Willamette College, the Debate Union offers students a platform to hone their skills in argumentation, advocacy, and public speaking.

The Debate Union welcomes students of all backgrounds and interests—whether you're looking to make debate a cornerstone of your college experience or just one of many activities. We encourage participation from all full-time College of Arts and Sciences students who meet the minimum GPA requirements. Our members, some of the university's brightest, excel both academically and in their extracurricular pursuits.

Programs Offered

Intercollegiate Debate

The Willamette University Debate Union offers a comprehensive Intercollegiate Debate program that includes a focus on Worlds Style Debate, the most popular global debate format. In Worlds Style Debate, four two-person teams compete on topics announced just 15 minutes before the round. Unlike traditional formats with simple win-loss outcomes, teams are ranked from 1 to 4 based on their performance. This format has seen growing popularity in the United States, and Willamette University is at the forefront of this movement, striving to excel and innovate in this area. Through participation in various intercollegiate tournaments, our students gain valuable experience and skills in argumentation, critical thinking, and public speaking. The Debate Union actively supports students' involvement in these competitions, providing a platform for them to excel both regionally and internationally.

International Debate

What sets the Willamette University Debate Union apart is our strong International Debate Program. Over the past decade, our debaters have competed in countries such as Ireland, Australia, Malaysia, South Africa, Romania, and more. This year, we plan to participate in tournaments in China and host international students, including two from Shanghai for the Mark O. Hatfield Debate tournament.

Public Advocacy - Philomathean Society

Our Public Advocacy Program goes beyond intercollegiate competition, involving students in various advocacy efforts on campus and within the Salem community. Activities include open mics, campus discussions, town-hall meetings at the Oregon State Capitol, and unique programs with inmates at the Oregon State Penitentiary.

Get Involved

Students can join the Debate Union for a minimum of one academic year, after which continued participation requires an application process. All Willamette University students are invited to explore this enriching experience, whether through Intercollegiate Debate, International Debate, or Public Advocacy programs.
