History and Origins

The Asian Pacific American Law Student Association at Willamette University School of Law has a rich history rooted in a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and advocacy. While the organization existed in some form prior to 2012, it was formally re-established in December 2012 by a group of dedicated first-year law students. These students recognized the challenges faced by minorities in Oregon and sought to revitalize APALSA to advocate for underrepresented groups in both the legal profession and the broader community.

Since its reorganization, Willamette's APALSA has thrived, both regionally and nationally. Our members have continuously served in leadership roles within the National APALSA, including positions such as Pacific Northwest Regional Director, Director of Public Relations, Treasurer, and President. In 2014, APALSA made history by hosting the Thomas Tang Regional Moot Court competition in Portland, Oregon, becoming the first law school in the state to do so. Our team was also the first in Oregon to win the regional championship and compete on the national stage.

Beyond these accomplishments, APALSA at Willamette has been a steadfast advocate for diversity, inclusion, and public service. Our members actively contribute to the community, championing justice, fairness, and equality.

Though our history may be brief, Willamette's APALSA has established itself as a leader in promoting diversity and inclusion in the Pacific Northwest. We are committed to continuing our tradition of excellence, service, and advocacy for generations to come, embodying the university's motto: Non nobis solum nati sumus—"Not unto ourselves alone are we born."
