Drug-Free Workplace Policy

Purpose:

In accordance with the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 and the Drug Free Schools and Community Act Amendments of 1989, Willamette University recognizes that prohibiting the use or influence of alcohol, illegal drugs and controlled substances in the workplace will improve the safety, health and productivity of our employees. The objective of the University's policy is to provide and maintain a safe and healthy workplace for all employees and to protect the students of the University.

Policy: 

  1. Prohibited Use of Alcohol and Drugs - The improper use, abuse, possession, distribution, manufacture, dispensation, purchase, transfer or sale of alcohol or drugs by employees when on work time, on duty, on university premises or in other circumstances where an employee could adversely affect the University's reputation is prohibited.  All employees are expected to comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws regarding the use of controlled substances.

    Employees must not report for duty, be on university premises or represent the University while under the influence of alcohol, illegal Drugs or controlled substances On occasions where alcoholic beverages are served in conjunction with certain business or social  events related to University business, employees should drink moderately and must be fit to perform their duties and other responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner. Employees must adhere to the university’s Alcohol Policy.

  2. Reasonable Suspicion Testing - Employee drug and alcohol testing may be conducted whenever the University has a reasonable suspicion that an employee or a group of employees is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  3. Reporting - The University requires that employees notify the AVP for Human Resources within five days should they be arrested for a drug/alcohol related crime. Additionally,  if an employee is convicted of a drug related crime while engaged in activities that were sponsored or connected to the university, federal law requires that the university report this to the appropriate federal agencies.
  4. Rehabilitation and Treatment - The University supports employees who seek treatment for drug and alcohol related problems. Professional counseling and treatment programs for drug and alcohol problems are available to eligible employees through University provided health insurance and Employee Assistance Plans. Time away from work may be covered by the University’s paid time off and leave policies. More information related to these policies can be found on the Human Resources webpage
  5. Disciplinary Action - Non-compliance with this policy may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.  Additionally, employees who violate this policy may be required to participate in drug counseling or rehabilitation programs at their own expense.
