Willamette is excited to offer specific communities tied to our students personal interests. Spanning campus, these Focus Communities allow the residents to be able to develop deep ties related to special interests as well as staff and faculty across campus.
Focused Communities for First Year Students
Students interested in the first year Focused Interest Communities can indicate their interest on the New Student Housing Application. Students may apply for more than one community on their application.
Students who are selected to live in a Focused Interest Community are able to select roommates only from others who also applied to live in the community, unless there is lower interest than anticipated. If this occurs students accepted to the community may select any other first year roommate.
The Lavender Community provides a living space for students that is focused on LGBTQ+ issues and is open to all. Residents will have access to supportive programming and resources to enhance their sense of belonging, well-being, and identity within the university community. In a fun living environment, residents will connect meaningfully with others throughout the year. Residents will be able to choose to live with roommates of their liking. This focused community closely works with the Gender Resource and Advocacy Center in its programs and events.
The Mosaics community provides a living space for students who are first in their families to attend college as well as any student interested in support for the transition to college. Students in this community receive targeted outreach to receive a student, staff, and/or faculty mentor through the Mosaics Mentorship Program facilitated through the Office of Intercultural Engagement & Inclusion.
The focus community of Outdoor Pursuits and Sustainability allows students who are interested in these areas to live together in Terra Hall. The Resident Advisor will share opportunities through Outdoor Programs to allow students to get involved. Students living in the community can also initiate their own outdoor activities or sustainability initiatives by partnering with Matthews Hall Council and Residence Hall Association and the Outdoor Program (ODP).
The STEM Fellows Program is a vibrant Living Learning Community for first year students who've been accepted into the STEM Fellows Program. Students who opt into the community will live together, take classes together and be supported by a Resident Advisor who is a STEM major. Dr Cooper Battle, our faculty advisor, actively engages with students in the community.
