Faculty and Staff
It’s no secret that Willamette faculty and staff have a huge impact on students. Students trust our faculty and staff to provide career advice and to connect them with useful resources.
The Career Center appreciates all the ways that our faculty and staff colleagues are supporting our students, and we are eager to support your work.
Career Readiness In The Classroom Post A Job Refer Employers
Career Readiness In The Classroom
Students trust the faculty and staff members who know them best — and they want you to provide guidance about how their Willamette education is leading them to future career success.
Faculty are in a special position to help students understand how their in-class learning is leading them to build the career competencies that employers expect. Below are several ways that the Career Center can help you promote your students’ success.
Request a Presentation
We would love the opportunity to visit your class and speak with your students. We cover a variety of topics, and can tailor the content to meet your needs. Presentations typically cover topics such as resumes and cover letters, searching for jobs, and utilizing LinkedIn or other online tools in the job search. Additionally, the Career Center has a network of employer and alumni contacts who are willing to serve as guest speakers. Please submit a Presentation Request Form and a member of the Career Center will follow up with you.
Career Center Interview Rooms
Do you have an assignment that requires quiet space for students to record or meet virtually with someone? We have "interview rooms" that students can book:
Add a Career Assignment to Your Class
Many faculty have found that assignments in their courses can help students reflect on how their academic work connects with careers. We can collaborate with you to develop learning activities, exercises, homework assignments, and reading material for integrating career development into your class.
Faculty Resources
Our team has put together documents that reflect what employers are looking for when they engage with or recruit students. In conjunction with additional resources, we have also included methods of integrating career readiness in the classroom.
Internships for Academic Credit
We offer a course for general credit (IDS 194) and we can also support departments in offering sections specific to their major. For more information, please visit the Internships for Academic Credit page, or email Geoff DeJanvier, Associate Director of Career Development.
Share Information with Your Students
Please tell students about the career services available to them! The Career Center serves any Willamette student who has questions about their career journey. Our advisors meet individually with students throughout the year. Students can book 1:1 time here.
List the Career Center as a resource on your course syllabus. Our website is https://my.willamette.edu/site/careers; we are in the Putnam University Center on the first floor across from the Bistro, and our phone number is 503-370-6413. We offer drop in hours Monday-Friday from 1–3 p.m.
Encourage Students to Use Handshake
Handshake is the portal for Willamette students to learn about jobs, internships, and other career opportunities. It’s not just for students who are actively job seeking - it is also an effective resource for students who are learning about potential careers. In addition to providing job listings, Handshake includes lists of events and links to resources that help students learn about potential careers.
Please encourage students to utilize Handshake! We know that students respond when their trusted faculty and staff members nudge them and explain how the system is relevant at the current point in their college career.
Post Your Opportunity
Hiring Students
Thank you for creating opportunities through on-campus employment and work-study. Your department's investment in hiring students makes a big impact.
When Willamette students need an on-campus job or internship, they turn to the Career Center and the job boards on Handshake. Posting campus jobs on Handshake is not only beneficial for your department, it is now required to hire a student employee. Listing your job on Handshake can help you find top talent, review applications easily and efficiently, and ensure that students never miss an employment opportunity.

Hiring Students with Work-Study
For information on the work-study program, visit the Financial Aid & Scholarships webpage.
If you are going to require work-study for a student employment position, make sure that it is clearly stated at the top of the ‘job description’ field of your Handshake posting.
We recommend asking students to submit separate proof of work-study eligibility. The work-study labels on student Handshake profiles are not reliable. You will need to request that students attach documentation of their work-study award along with their application materials.
Before offering employment, verify work-study. This is done through the Financial Aid & Scholarships office.
Refer Employers and Alumni
Willamette faculty and staff have connections with alumni and employers who may be interested in recruiting our students, who can teach our students about their industries, or who can share general career advice. Help us connect with them!
The Career Center offers a wide range of services to help employers with posting internships or jobs, recruiting future talent, or simply raising their visibility on campus; we are also frequently seeking volunteers for events.
If you are ready to refer an employer or alumnus to us, please complete this form.
If you have any questions about how we help employers connect with students, contact our Director of Employer Engagement.
